Alex, 19, from Crook, is a fantastic example of how determination, hands-on learning, and the right support can open the door to a successful engineering career.

After attending Wolsingham School, Alex joined South West Durham Training (SWDT) in September 2023 as a full-time learner on the Multi-Skilled Maintenance pathway.

With no prior engineering experience, Alex quickly embraced the practical nature of the course, developing a strong foundation in key areas such as Health & Safety, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, and CAD.

Following the successful completion of his first year, Alex progressed onto the Level 3 Engineering Technologies Full-Time course, where he continued to build his technical knowledge and confidence.

Over just two years, Alex transformed from a complete beginner into a capable and motivated engineering learner with a clear career goal.

Alex particularly enjoyed studying Computer-Aided Design (CAD) at SWDT, where he discovered a passion for engineering design and technical drawing.

Reflecting on his time at SWDT, Alex said: “I could tell that SWDT was different from other colleges based on the hands-on technical skills you learn here, as well as its tight-knit community.

I have learnt so much in just two years. SWDT has enabled a clear pathway into my chosen field.”

Upon successfully completing his Level 3 course, Alex secured employment as a CAD Apprentice with The Sirius Group.

In his role, Alex produces report drawings for site work, identifies potential hazards, and ensures that land and grounds are safe for construction.

He is already building a strong portfolio of evidence to support his Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering Design.

Alex shared his excitement about starting his apprenticeship: “I am loving my apprenticeship so far. The team at The Sirius Group is really supportive.”

Alex’s mentor, Matthew Fernie, a CAD Technician at The Sirius Group, said: “In a short time, Alex has shown impressive growth, adapting quickly to new systems and producing high-quality work that adds real value to the team.

Working alongside SWDT has been a pleasure, and the support they have provided has been excellent. We look forward to continuing to build our relationship with them in the future.”

Alex’s journey has also been supported by the dedicated tutors at SWDT, who have guided him both academically and practically throughout his training.

Keith Shepherd, Lecturer at SWDT, said: “Alex’s development over his time at SWDT has been outstanding. He joined us with no prior engineering experience, but through hard work, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in learning, he quickly built strong technical skills, particularly in CAD.

Alex is motivated, reliable, and highly suited to a career in engineering. He is a credit to himself and will be a real asset to The Sirius Group.” Looking ahead, Alex hopes to secure a full-time position as a CAD Technician upon completing his apprenticeship.

His journey highlights the value of practical training, strong employer links, and clear progression routes — and serves as an inspiring example for future SWDT learners.
