Apprenticeships Building Strong Futures: Elliot Burnside’s Story

Elliot Burnside

At just 18 years old, Elliot Burnside is already laying strong foundations for a successful career in the plumbing and heating industry.

A former student of King James Comprehensive School, Elliot continued his education as a full-time student at SWDT before taking the next step into a Plumbing and Heating Level 2 apprenticeship.

After discovering the opportunity through college, Elliot began his apprenticeship with Maddison Davey Mechanical Services Ltd (MDS), where he is gaining valuable hands-on experience while continuing to develop his technical skills.

Maddison Davey Mechanical Services Ltd was established in June 2017 by Ryan Davey and Joseph Maddison, both of whom completed their own apprenticeships and early careers with a local Bishop Auckland plumbing company.

With strong roots in the local area, MDS chose SWDT specifically because it aligned with their values of supporting local talent and offering young people the opportunity to gain knowledge, experience, and a long-term career in the trade.

This commitment to community and training is clearly reflected in their approach to apprenticeships. Since joining MDS in September 2026, Elliot has already made a strong impression.

He has shown great potential, a positive attitude toward work, and an ability to fit in well with the team. Reflecting on his experience so far, Elliot describes the apprenticeship as “very good” and encourages others considering this route to take the leap.

“It’s definitely worth it,” he says, “as you learn new skills and improve the more you do something.”

Elliot’s journey highlights the real value of apprenticeships — combining education, practical experience, and personal growth — and demonstrates how local businesses and training providers can work together to build the workforce of the future.
