Launching our latest apprenticeships
SWDT has supported employers in the engineering and manufacturing sectors for more than 55 years – from SMEs to global multinationals.
As we continue our celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, today we are featuring employers we currently have apprentices with.
They include Marshall Jakeman Marine, a family-run business based in Middlesbrough which operates Marshall Art, which was converted from a pleasure craft to a unique survey vessel by directors Barry Marshall and Chris Jakeman and completed in 2010.
It is hired to the hydrographic, environmental, ROV and AUV industries for various purposes including ROV support, AUV/drone surveys and bird/mammal surveys.

Harvey Jakeman, whose dad is Managing Director Chris Jakeman, is working towards an Engineer Fitting Apprenticeship whilst working on Marshall Art.
Harvey, 19, said: “I am happy to have joined the family business and hope to carry on the legacy. I have grown up on the dock and have been helping my dad for a while now so I have a good understanding of what goes on here which will hopefully put me in good stead to successfully complete my apprenticeship.”
Kirsty Lewton, Senior Business Development Advisor at SWDT, added: “It is great to be working in collaboration with MJM. The purpose-built survey vessel is very impressive and has developed significantly since the last time I saw it a few months ago.
“Harvey has already been working on this project for a while now, so there is no doubt he will have gained significant skills, knowledge and experience that will prove useful throughout his apprenticeship.”
Kirsty Lewton, Breckon Connolly and BTS Facades & Fabrications FD Marcia Atkinson
Aycliffe Business Park-based facade and rainscreen systems manufacturer BTS Facades and Fabrications recently took on Breckon Connolly as a first year Metal Fabricator Apprentice.
The former Greenfield Academy student, 18, said: “I am proud to have been given the opportunity at BTS Facades & Fabrications. I have felt welcomed and supported by staff at both BTS and SWDT and I am ready for the challenges that may lay ahead.”
Marcia Atkinson, FD at BTS Facades & Fabrications, said: “We are proud to have Breckon join our team. We will help support Breckon through his apprenticeship just like we support all of our employees. We are a very people-focused company and are invested in our employees; giving them the opportunities and training they require.
"We are committed to helping the youth of our local area and have strong links with our local schools including Greenfield Academy, where Breckon carried out his studies.”
Operations Director Nigel Freeman added: “We are pleased to be working with SWDT and welcome Breckon to the team. Breckon has been a breath of fresh air in regard to his attitude to work. He has exceptional enthusiasm for his age and is already fitting in well amongst the team. Breckon has good mentorship and plenty of support here at BTS and at SWDT and so should have no issues completing his apprenticeship.”
Kirsty Lewton added: “We are thrilled to be working with BTS Facades & Fabrications to support Breckon’s apprenticeship. He has been given an excellent opportunity and should be proud of himself for getting this far. We wish him all the very best for his future and will continue to support him alongside his employer throughout the apprenticeship.”
