He received more good news during a work placement at soft drinks manufacturer Cawingredients in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire, when he was offered an apprenticeship as a Mechatronic Engineer.

Owen said: “During my studies, my aim was to go to university and I was offered a place on an agricultural engineering degree. However, my work placement progression coach arranged a fantastic work placement for me at Cawingredients.

“During my placement I was asked to submit my CV and was then invited for interview. I was delighted to be offered an apprenticeship and had to make a big decision about my future.

“I enjoy earning and learning so decided to accept the apprenticeship and continue my studies at SWDT, which has provided me with the skills and knowledge in engineering maintenance procedures and techniques.

“My role involves being part of the canning team which involves general plant maintenance and investigation as to why things are happening and how to prevent breakdowns. I love my new role as it matches my skills set perfectly which is mechanically-focused and I learn something new every day.

“I am very grateful to the Student Progression Team as without the work placement and introduction to the company, I would not be where I am now in my career. My advice to all students is don’t give up, try your hardest and set yourself goals which you can look forward to achieving.”

Caroline Wilkinson, HR Lead at Cawingredients added: “Work experience students from SWDT provide a key element of our development pipeline and we are delighted that Owen has chosen to accept an apprenticeship with us following his very successful placement. “Through his academic studies and practical experience, Owen should develop into a competent and capable resource within our engineering team.”
