If you enjoy doing practical things and you want a skill that you can use in different ways, this could be perfect for you. As a plumber you would fit, service and repair water pipes and heating systems in homes and businesses. This course provides the perfect foundation for study in this technical and rewarding field.

This full time course is taught up to 3 days a week for 1 year and includes Maths and English. This course will be taught at our South West Durham site in Newton Aycliffe.

During this course you will attend both practical and theory lessons for you Level 1 plumbing course. You will also take part in Enterprise projects and if required Maths and English at functional or resitting your GCSE Maths and/or English.

By the end of the course you will achieve a full level 1 Diploma.


You will learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career progression within the plumbing sector.

If you gain suitable grades you may want to progress to the Plumbing Level 2 course or a paid NVQ Plumbing Apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of three GCSEs at grade 4-2 including maths and/or English depending on course requirements. Alternative qualifications will be considered. An interview and short assessment will assess your suitability and interest in the subject.

You will need boots and overalls which can be purchased through the college.

Course Cost

Course fee as set based on the age of the student at 31 August in the year they begin their study.

This course is fully funded for

  • All students aged 16, 17 and 18 
  • Learners, aged 19 to 23, without a full level 2 qualification

24+ students, will be required to pay course fees up to £3,300.
