South West Durham Training staff were delighted to win an award at the fourth annual Aycliffe Business Park ‘Make Your Mark’ awards ceremony recently. A total of 32 separate companies entered for 11 different awards during the grand finale at the Xcel Centre.
SWDT won in the category of ‘Apprenticeships and Training’, acknowledging how the training provider had implemented an apprentice scheme as an integral part of developing their workforce. The award was sponsored by Gestamp, an international group dedicated to the design, development and manufacture of metal automotive components.

The award comes on the heels of recent expansion and growth at the engineering training provider. In the past few months, SWDT has expanded to take on five key new members of staff as the firm takes on higher numbers of full time school leavers and rapidly expands its higher education courses with new Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). The provider also recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and continues to capitalise on the growing demand for engineers in the North East.
SWDT is a subsidiary of Bishop Auckland College and employs more than 25 staff. They work with many of the region’s big employers including Hitachi Rail, Cummins and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
